The Amman Adventure – Cycle Sportive

Following on from the success of Tour de Shane, we are teaming up with the rugby legend once again, this time in his own back yard for the Amman Adventure. The event will be based at Shane’s first and “probably” last club Amman Utd RFC, which will be an ideal starting location to explore the surrounding countryside, which has been rated as amongst some of the best cycling roads in the UK.

This will be an ideal event to have one final sportive blast of 2017 and with two routes on offer an 80 and 50 miler we have something for all abilities to end the season on.

/

The 80 Miler

Will see you head over the Black Mountains, through Llandovery, and make your way to Brecon. In the Market town you will be greeted by an aid station outside of the Royal Welsh Regiment Museum with it’s tribute to The Rorke’s Drift battle. From here you will start to make your way back to the Amman through the Brecon Beacon National Park passing by the national show caves of Wales and through the valley towns and villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwmllynfell before arriving back at Glanaman. A great ride on good roads, with spectacular views all in all a great challenge or cycling day out with friends.

The 50 miler

The Amman Adventure 50 mile route takes in some of the most spectacular countryside the South Wales Valleys have to offer. With great roads that have ideal surfaces for cycling and although the route does have 3 respectable peaks the overall elevation for the course is reasonable, meaning there are also some great flat or down hill sections that really allow you to stretch the legs and enjoy the ride. As a sportive we feel the ride has the lot, from challenging climbs to rolling roads and great views at a distance that is achievable for all.

Shane Williams

Shane may be one of the most respected Rugby players in the world for what he achieved and the way he conducted himself whilst playing for Wales, The Lions, the Osprey and in Japan but the fact that at the age of 40 he is still turning out for Amman Utd show’s what the game and is home town club mean to him. And following on from the success of Tour de Shane in Pembrokeshire, Shane immediately stated he would love to do something similar in the Amman Valley and from there the Amman Adventure leg of the Tour de Shane was born.

Charity

Like the Pembrokeshire’s Tour De Shane, The Amman Adventure will see funds from the day being donated to The Velindre Cancer Centre a charity that Shane has done a number of fundraising events for over the years and is proud to support and act as an ambassador for.

The Amman Adventure 80 mile route takes in some of the most spectacular countryside the South Wales Valleys have to offer. With great roads that have ideal surfaces for cycling and although the route does have 3 or 4! respectable peaks the overall elevation for the course is reasonable, meaning there are also some great flat or down hill sections that really allow you to stretch the legs and enjoy the ride. As a sportive we feel the ride has the lot, from challenging climbs to rolling roads and great views.

The biggest and most brutal climb of the day comes after only 3 miles and will see you make a 4 mile climb over the Black Mountains, the first half of this climb is steady with the last two miles being an out of the saddle type push! a couple of things will keep you going through this hard slog, 1) the view at the top 2) the knowledge that the next 15 miles will be either down hill or flat! From here the route will take you down a spectacular and technical decent and once in the valley you will make your way to Llandovery, this section has a good few miles of flat, straight open roads, which will allow you to stretch your legs, before you reach the A40 and head into Brecon, at the Market town you will be greeted by an aid station outside of the Royal Welsh Regiment Museum with it’s tribute to The Rorke’s Drift battle. From here you will start to make your way back to the Amman through the Brecon Beacon National Park where you will face one final climb of the day before passing by the national show caves of Wales and through the valley towns and villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwmllynfell before arriving back at Glanaman for refreshments.

The biggest and most brutal climb of the day comes after only 3 miles and will see you make a 4 mile climb over the Black Mountains, two things will keep you going through this hard slog, 1) the view at the top 2) the knowledge that the next 6 miles will be down hill! From here the 50 mile route has what we consider to be a treat a B road that takes you through the heart of the Brecon Beacons, past the Usk Reservoir, where you will join the A40 at Trecastle, this road really is a step back in time and although there are two cattle grid crossings, a steady climb to get to the ridge, once on the ridge it is spectacularly wild but with straight flat roads, which will allow you to enjoy the scenery. Once on the A40 you will make your way to Sennybridge, at the village renowned for its Military connections you will start to make your way back to the Amman through the Brecon Beacon National Park passing by the national show caves of Wales and through the valley towns and villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwmllynfell before arriving back at Glanaman for well earned refreshments.

This is a great route for those seeking a challenge but not quite sure about the 80 miler
