Ras Dewi Sant 2018, 3rd March

Results for 2017 – CLICK HERE

2018 will see Man Up UK stage the 6th Annual Ras Dewi Sant, Coastal Path Marathon and Half Marathon. The Ras is definitely our flag ship event as it shows off the best that St Davids and the Peninsular has to offer. It is staged every year on the same Saturday as the City’s St David’s Day Celebrations. This adds an extra vibrant feel to the run as the city is bustling and decorated with all things Welsh. For some, the last half mile will even see you run past the marching band and Dragon Parade!

Both the Half and Full marathons are predominately on the Coast Path and pass by some of the most scenic and historical sites in Wales and the UK. The Half is a challenge but an achievable challenge for all and has a great atmosphere amongst the runners. Whilst the Full is a Challenge for anyone, described by previous competitors as one of the most beautiful and difficult Marathons anywhere in the World and should be on any marathon runners bucket list of events.

The Ras HQ is based at St David’s RFC, where changing rooms, showers (rugby showers!), hot drinks, massage service, hot food (Cawl – what else on St Davids Day!) and beer are available all in a great environment to relax and chat to fellow runners, supporters and organisers.

This Marathon has been described as the toughest in the UK.

Marathon Man himself Rik Vercoe, the holder of numerous marathon world records and someone who boasts a 39th Place finish in the Marathon des Sables, won the 2013 Ras Dewi Sant and said on completion

“I’ve run a 137 Marathons in 137 weeks and this is the best, the course is stunning”

Runners will meet at the St.Davids Rugby Club and then be transferred by bus to the starting point at Celtic Camping, 3 miles North of St David’s. From there the competitors will continue North (on foot!) their journey will take them to the splendid fishing village of Porthgain via an interesting diversion in land and across country through Barry Island Farm, before heading back along the coast path South to Whitesands Beach covering some of the toughest terrain and most breath taking views anywhere in the UK. Amongst the constant undulating elevation that you will face there are two decent climbs – the first on about 8 miles at Penberi (this sneaks up on you!) and the second is on 13 miles and a bit naughty as we take you on a diversion, just so you can experience the Carn Llidi Climb AKA The Whitesands Challenge Hill!  Following this you will re-join the coastpath and head down to the aid station at Whitesands Beach, where you will pick up the half marathon route and continue on the Coast Path for a further 9 mile stint along this spectacular part of the National Park until you reach Caerfai Bay, taking in the scenic sights of St Justinian’s, Ramsey Sound (and the Bitches), Porthclais, and St Nons (St David’s Birth place) along the way.

Just when you think that’s that upon reaching mile 25 and you’re almost finished, you reach ‘The Sting in the Dragons Tail’! The spectacular site of the 12th Centaury Cathedral, it’s 39 steps and the Pebbles Hill are all amazing and lead you to the home straight through St David’s and Back to the Rugby Club.

On the positive side of things the first half of the marathon is a fair bit tougher than the second!

  • Keep the Coast on your Right
  • The Coast Path is marked by the ACORN – Follow the ACORN !
  • Footpaths are marked with a walking figure – DO NOT FOLLOW THESE
  • If we want you to head off the coast path we will sign post or marshal it
  • Please have a look at the route and familiarise yourself!

The Half

The Results 2017 – CLICK HERE

The Half Marathon starts at the St. David’s Rugby club with the first two miles being a road run, which helps to split the group before you reach Whitesands Beach. Here you will join the Coast Path for a 9 mile stint along this spectacular section of the National Park coast path that will take you around to Caerfai Bay. These 9 miles will see you taking in the scenic sights of St Justinian’s, Ramsay Island, Porthclais, and St Nons (St Davids Birth place). During miles 4.5 to 9 you really will be out in the wilds and face the toughest part of the course as you run along the Ramsay Sound, making your way from the Lifeboat Station to the aid station at Porthclais Harbour. It may be hard but this is also one of the most magical places you will visit and is there to be enjoyed!

Once you arrive in Caerfai there is a slight pull as course starts to take you back inland and then around the country bridleways and roads on the outskirts of the City until you reach mile 12 and the last challenge of the day – ‘The Sting in the Dragons Tail’! this is the spectacular 12th Centaury Cathedral, it’s 39 steps and the Pebbles Hill (run it if you can), which once completed leaves you with a 0.5mile flat home straight through St David’s and Back to the Rugby Club.
